I think I understand the point you are seeking to make, but at this point I do not think that I can agree with you.

You state that if a person obeys to receive something, and I assume this to mean anything, that his obedience is legalism. Such a statement as this does not take into account the idea of submission to the Lordship of Christ. Peter declared to those on the day of Pentecost who understood the charge against them – crucifying Christ – and who sought to be forgiven of this terrible sin that they were to repent and be baptized for the remission of their sins and reception of the Holy Ghost. If you are correct, then those who gladly obeyed, which amounted to about 3,000 souls, did so for naught because they did it to receive something; which is your very definition of legalism.

Submission to Christ through obedience is not legalism. Believing that my obedience earns or merits my salvation is legalism.
